Today is Razz's birthday. We are going to have a family dinner out at a "nicer' resturant, that is-not super expensive, but not the usual Indian dives we go to. I am hoping he will order some fancy flambe type of dessert.
I am still feeling kind of in shock from all the changes that have happened with both kids this year. Things go along for years pretty much the same, and then within one or two years, it is a whole new story.
PS I just found out that the restaurant we're going to (Zarra's) is where our old haunt, The Electric Banana, used to be-and not only that-the owners are the same people! I can't wait to see it. |

| You Would Be a Pet Fish | Relaxed and laid back, you prefer to sit back and observe what's going on around you. You are secretly very wise and intelligent, but few people take the time to learn about you. You don't mind if the world doesn't understand you. You're having enough fun trying to understand the world.
Why you would make a great pet: You're peaceful and nice to be around, but not very demanding
Why you would make a bad pet: Let's face it... the only person you're truly interesting to is yourself
What you would love about being a fish: Swimming around aimlessly without a care in the world
What you would hate about being a fish: Being used as bait or food for bigger fish |

Joe and I watched "Hard Labor" tonight. It is about a London char lady and it made "Bleak Moments" look like a the MGM Follies! It was flawlessly realistic and dreary and a lot of fun to watch. He is now my fav director. I think Heads Together has most of his films and i am going to rent as many as I can. |

Your Score: Myrna Loy You scored 19% grit, 28% wit, 19% flair, and 47% class! You are class itself, the calm, confident "perfect woman." Men turn and look at you admiringly as you walk down the street, and even your rivals have a grudging respect for you. You always know the right thing to say, do and, of course, wear. You can take charge of a situation when things get out of hand, and you're a great help to your partner even if they don't immediately see or know it. You are one classy dame. Your screen partners include William Powell and Cary Grant, you little simmerpot, you.

| The Best Garden Center |
[May. 20th, 2007|12:30 pm] |
I just found the best garden center ever! It's called The Urban Gardener and it's run by a couple of very nice women. They have some really unusual annuals and perennials there. I was able to get everything on my list that was unavailable elsewhere. I got some morning glory vines, some portulaca, weird looking purple daisies and last years fiasco-orange cosmos!! It is a small place on Brighton Rd. on the Northside, but it is just packed with goodies. I highly recommend it.
btw: I'm still feeling like I'm free of some awful negative influence-I guess it's for real :-) |

| wheat gluten update |
[Apr. 22nd, 2007|03:52 pm] |
Morningstar farms' faq said they checked with their wheat gluten suppliers who"indicated" they did not get their WG from China now, or previously. I sent them an email asking if they *definitely* didn't get their WG from China since the word "indicated" seemed a little wishy washy to me.
I bought stuff to make cat and dog food (blech). Naturally, the cats wouldn't touch their fillets of white ruffy, so i guess I will have to mix some of their canned dreck into it at first.
I feel like a real survivalist type person-maybe I ought to start stockpiling bottled water too-but my cats and dog mean so much to me. |

| | angry | ] | Ya know, importing food made in China is about as smart as importing cars made in Yugoslavia.
I just found out that the company(Royal Canin) that made the cat and dog food I used to buy just got on the list of companies having to recall products containing ingredients from China that are tainted with Melamine. Luckily the specific type of food that was recalled is not the same as the stuff I was feeding my animals, and I stopped using it awhile back because it had wheat gluten in it, and I read that 80% of wheat gluten comes from China. But this got me to thinking-it appears that adding Melamine to food products in China was not limited to the one company, so perhaps it is a widespread practice. Since the chinese gov. won't give visas to FDA investigators, it is hard to know for sure. But based on their lousy record when it comes to human and animal rights, I wouldn't be surprised one bit, and if so I'm wondering if we won't be getting reports of tainted human food soon as well.
We eat a lot of faux meat products in our family, mainly made of wheat gluten. I called Morningstar Farms awhile back to ask if their wheat gluten was imported from China. The person i spoke with had a heavy accent so it was hard to communicate. She said their wheat gluten did not come from Menu Foods, the company associated with the first wave of tainted pet food, but she did not say it wasn't chinese. Now that they are finding melamine in rice protein imported from China I have not only had to recheck all the pet food I've been buying( I just spent over a dollar a can at the EEFC for Wellness cat food-which is made by Menu Foods! :-P I'm back to Friskies) but I am also not going to eat any more food with ingredients that are from China. Monday I will call Morninngstar Farms again and try to get a plain answer from them. Actually I'm about ready to give up eating any foods processed by big companies. I don't trust any of them. |

[Sep. 29th, 2006|08:32 am] |
Since C is so into the musical Rent, I'm going to start using it for unschooling purposes. I think we'll go over the history of Alphabet City, which will lead into discussions about immigrants, minority cultures, gentrification, etc. We've already talked about drug addiction, and AIDS, which takes care of our Safety and Health requirements.
We'll read some poems by Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes(both mentioned in La Vie Boheme) but, pghmama, I'm gonna leave mutual masturbation and dildos(also mentioned in that song) floating up above her head where they'll no doubt stay until she is older and no longer into Rent. |
